Botswana Travellers Guide: Places To Visit

Botswana is a wildlife and bird watchers paradise, with 17% of the country National park land, and over 40% if you add on private concessions. Plus the unique Okavango Delta. Due to eco-taxes added by the Botswana government safaris here are relatively exense but definitely worth it.

Chobe National Park
The Chobe National Park, which is the second largest national park in Botswana and covers 10,566 square kilometres, it has one of the greatest concentrations of game found on the African continent, particularly elephant. The park is divided into four distinctly different eco systems:
Serondela with its lush plains and dense forests in the Chobe River area in the extreme north-east; the Savuti Marsh in the west;
the Linyanti Swamps in the north-west
the hot dry hinterland in between.

Savuti boasts one of the highest concentrations of wildlife left on the African continent. Animals are present during all seasons, and at certain times of the year their numbers can be staggering.  Sauvuti is particularly famous for its resident Lion and spotted hyena populations.

Gaborone
Capital city of Botswana and home to just over 200,00 people.  It is the largest city and is a purpose built capital and is now just over 40 years old.  The National museum and gallery is located here, as is the seat of Government and the University of Botswana.
Kgale hill sits to the west of the city and provides good views over the city and nearby Dam.
St Claire Lion Park, has lions, bar restaurant, vulture feeding, children's play area, horse trails and three dams.

Central Kalahari Game Reserve
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve has no permanent surface water, but unlike the image of most deserts, the Kalahari is well vegetated with a wide variety of habitats including acacia trees and areas of flat grasslands that seem to stretch forever.
The Park is huge, 60,000 square kilometres (23,166 miles2) in total area, a fact which makes it the world's second largest conservancy. The park is home to Springbok and Gemsbok, Blue Wildebeest, Eland, Red Hartebeest, plus Cheetah, Lion, Leopard, both Brown and Spotted Hyena, and Wild Dog, giraffe, meerkat (Suricate), Ostrich, eland, jackals and Porupine.
There are also scattered popualtions of San bushmen.

Khama Rhino Sanctuary
The rhino sanctuary is a community trust project situated near to Serowe. The project aims to restore the area previously teeming with wildlife to it former glory.
Khama Rhino Sanctuary opens every day at 8:00am and closes at 6:30pm. Guided game drives, rhino trails and nature walks can be booked and paid for at the Entrance Gate. Both take about two hours, during which time you will be guided around the Sanctuary by our well trained and very knowledgeable Rangers. Morning drives and trails start at 6:00am, and the afternoon activities start at 4:00pm. Night drives start at 7:00pm.

Makgadikgadi Salt Pans
The Makgadikgadi represent a haunting and fascinating environment whose thrifty nature is a perfect contrast to the life that erupt out of every corner of the Okavango Delta. The pans flood between January and March, if it rains enough. This causes grasses to burst info life, flamingos to arrive by their thousands to nest, and a great migration of countless zebra and wildebeest to arrive. When this happens it is one of Africa's great wildlife spectacles.
Wildlife here includes: black-maned Kalahari lion, leopard, wild dog, cheetah, springbok, gemsbok, herds of wildebeest and zebra, brown and spotted hyena, and eland and other antelopes.

Maun
Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta. In recent years it has grown from a small village to a sprawling town with shopping centres, hotels and vehicle hire all available. It is a good place to restock before or after a Delta visit.

Okavango Delta
A 6,000-square-mile maze of lagoons, channels, and islands helps Okavango earn the description "the river that never finds the sea". The countless islands that emerge from its waterways give rise to several diverse ecosystems, which in turn are home to vast numbers of game and a myriad of bird species. The crystal clear waters support many kinds of fish. The area is a birder’s paradise.
The Delta is usually accessed by 4 x 4 vehicle although flights can be used. Once in the delta area transportation is by traditional dug out canoe, called mokoros, and then game walks on the deltas many islands. Local guides are used as the polers in the mokoros and as the guides on walks.
